Chapter 19

Rift Conference

Rift Flagship E’pinos’a

An even more than normally subdued General Warsh, the Rift Ground Force Commander, had flown up to the flagship in orbit around the planet to confer in person with Expeditionary Force Commander General Osmu’a. He brought with him Sub-Commander Therba, the only one of his primary Sub-Commanders to survive the battles several days earlier. General Warsh said, “The Eastern attack force has embarked on ships and they are on their way south now. They should arrive at the southern coastal settlement in one more day. The seas are calm and the ships are moving at their fastest speed.”

“And the injured Andoval?” Osmu’a asked him.

“They are being moved by airship.”

Osmu’a gave the equivalent of a sigh and asked, “And do we know how many of them our healers think will be able to return to their attack units?”

Warsh hesitated then replied, “It is difficult to say, General. Some will only be good for guard duty for some time. We have perhaps 700 from the eastern attack force in fighting condition now with another 500 injured who will need more time to recover. Perhaps half of them will be capable of returning to full battle capability within thirty local days.”

“And the Northern attack force?” Osmu’a looked over at Therba.

The Sub-Commander replied, “Most have moved southwest away from the northern settlement. Airships have taken the injured to the river settlement but with only three of them available and one assigned to the Eastern force it took longer than I’d hoped. The rest of the Northern attack force continues to march south and west to the marshaling area. They will be hungry when they arrive but there is food there for them. I have left 200 Andoval and three Rift officers in the agricultural areas south of the northern settlement to deny it to the invaders.”

Osmu’a sighed again then said to Warsh, “I am concerned that the aliens will try to take advantage of our weakened condition. They may be emboldened in the wake of the disaster that has befallen us.”

Warsh replied, “Perhaps that is so, but they have suffered great losses as well. They are much weaker now than before. I think we should attack again as soon as possible. There is still time remaining before the rains begin in earnest. Concentrate the major part of our remaining forces, 5,000 at least, and attack as soon as possible. We can be ready to attack in six or seven days.”

The Expeditionary Force Commander eyed his ground force commander dolefully, “You would risk everything now? To attack where?”

Warsh answered quickly, “The central settlement where Ocha failed so miserably; an attack over the open plain to the south of the alien settlement. It is what Ocha should have done after his attack force was reduced in the valley while trying and failing to take the alien transport. We can still come out of this with at least one more victory and it would complicate the intruders’ plans for the winter.”

“I appreciate your counsel, General.
